Choosing a Format
The format card you click determines the entire class structure — exercises, field types (springs vs. weight vs. breath), and sequencing arc.
Click the format that matches your class type:
| Format | Best for | Key fields generated |
|---|---|---|
| Reformer Pilates | Studio reformer classes | Springs, position, reps, tempo |
| Mat Pilates | Floor-based Pilates | Position, reps, props |
| Yoga Flow (Vinyasa) | Dynamic yoga sequences | Sanskrit name, breath, duration |
| Yin Yoga | Passive, long-hold yoga | Hold time, meridian, target area |
| Yoga Sculpt | Yoga with weights | Weight, reps, intensity note |
| Barre | Barre fitness classes | Reps/counts, tempo, position |
After clicking a format, the form below updates automatically with format-specific focus areas, vibes, and props options.
Generating a Class
Form Fields
| Field | What it does |
|---|---|
| Duration | Sets class length (30–90 min). Longer classes get more exercises AND more songs in the playlist. |
| Level | Beginner / Intermediate / Advanced / Mixed Level — adjusts exercise complexity and coaching language. |
| Focus Area | The primary body focus (Full Body, Core, Glutes, etc.) — influences exercise selection throughout. |
| Vibe | The emotional energy of the class — affects coaching cue language and music mood. |
| Props | Check any props available in your studio. Only checked props will appear in exercises. |
| Playlist Mood | Sets the energy feel for the music suggestions. |
| Genre | Music genre preference for the playlist. |
| Instructor Notes | Free text — describe anything specific: "client has shoulder injury", "focus on hip flexors", "build toward crow pose". |
| Class Name (optional) | If filled in, the AI uses your exact name. Leave blank and it invents an evocative name. |
The Surprise Me button
Click 🎲 Surprise Me next to the generate button to randomize all settings while keeping your selected format. Great for discovering new class ideas or breaking out of a rut.
Generation takes 30–60 seconds. This is normal — the AI is writing an entire class plan. On mobile, try starting with a 30-minute class if you experience timeouts.
Reading Your Results
What each element means
| Element | Description |
|---|---|
| Section header | Warm-Up / Main Sequence / Cool Down — with body focus and duration estimate. |
| Exercise name (underlined) | Click any exercise name to open a detail panel with coaching notes, modification, and YouTube/video search links. |
| Colored tags | Springs/weight (terracotta), position (gray), reps (blue), tempo (purple), breath (green). |
| Coaching cue | The primary instructor cue for this exercise. |
| Mod line | A modification to make the exercise more accessible. |
| ⋮⋮ drag handle | Grab and drag to reorder exercises within a section. |
| ↻ swap button | Replace this exercise with a different one in the same section. |
Swapping Exercises & Songs
Swapping an exercise
Click the ↻ button
Each exercise row has a circular swap button on the right. Click it to replace that exercise with a different one in the same section.
Wait 5–10 seconds
The button shows ⏳ while the AI generates a replacement. The new exercise slots into the exact same position with all fields filled in.
Keep swapping if needed
Not happy with the replacement? Just hit ↻ again. You can swap any exercise as many times as you want.
Pro tip: The AI knows which section you're in, so a swap in Cool Down will always return an appropriate stretch, not a strength move.
Swapping a song
In the Playlist section at the bottom, each song has its own ↻ button. Click it to get a different song for that section of the class (Warm-Up, Main Sequence, or Cool Down).
Exercise detail panel
Click any underlined exercise name to open a detail panel showing the full coaching notes and three video search links:
- YouTube Tutorial — finds instructional videos
- YouTube Demo — finds demonstration videos
- Google Video — broader video search
All links open in a new tab. If you've set up an ExerciseDB API key, you'll also see an animated GIF demonstration.
Class Names
By default, the AI generates an evocative class name like "Golden Hour Sculpt" or "Midnight Pulse." If you want to use your own name:
Fill in the Class Name field before generating
There's an optional "Class Name" text field just above the Generate button. Type your preferred name here — e.g., "Tuesday Glute Burner" or "Sarah's Birthday Barre."
Or rename after generating
The large class name at the top of your results is an editable text field. Click it and type a new name at any time. It saves automatically with the class.
Teach Mode
Teach Mode transforms your class plan into a clean full-screen view designed for teaching — one exercise at a time, readable from a distance.
How to enter Teach Mode
After generating or opening a saved class, click the 📱 Teach button in the top action bar.
Navigating exercises
| Action | How |
|---|---|
| Next exercise | Click Next → button or press → or ↓ |
| Previous exercise | Click ← Prev button or press ← or ↑ |
| Jump to a section | Click any section tab (Warm-Up / Main Sequence / Cool Down) |
| Jump to a specific exercise | Click any dot in the progress dots row |
| Exit Teach Mode | Click ← Back to Class or press Esc |
Using the Timer
Every exercise in Teach Mode has a built-in timer at the bottom of the card.
For exercises with a set hold time (e.g. Yin Yoga)
If an exercise has a hold time (like "3–5 minutes"), you'll see the circular ring timer and a ▶ Start (3-5 minutes) button. Click it to start the countdown. The ring animates as time elapses, and the screen pulses when 30 seconds remain.
For all other exercises
You'll see a ▶ Timer button and a number input (defaulting to 1 minute). Change the number to how many minutes you want, then click the button to start.
Auto-advance (Yin Yoga only)
In Yin Yoga classes, you can enable Auto-advance timer at the top of the teach view. When ON, the class automatically moves to the next pose when the timer completes — ideal for eyes-closed yin sessions.
Teaching tip: Set your phone face-down with the screen on. The timer vibrates at 30 seconds remaining (on supported devices) so you know when to cue the transition without watching the screen.

This opens your personal exercise library.
Click "+ Add Exercise"
Fill in the format, body area, difficulty, and exercise name. Add the relevant fields for your format (springs, reps, cue, etc.).

Custom exercises are labeled with a ★ in your library. They're tied to your account — each instructor's custom exercises are private to them.

Go to My Exercises
Click My Exercises in the header navigation.
Click "✚ Submit to Library"
This opens the submission form.
Fill in the details
Include the exercise name, format, which section it belongs in, a description of how to do it, and typical reps or hold time.
Click Submit for Review
The BuildMyClass team reviews submissions and adds approved moves to the global library. You'll hear back via email.
Themes & Variety
After selecting a format, a Theme dropdown may appear. Themes give the class a creative direction beyond just the format — like "Midnight Pulse", "Golden Hour", "Ocean Depth", or "Fire and Ice."
Each theme subtly influences the exercise selection, coaching cue language, class name, tagline, and playlist mood — creating a cohesive experience rather than a random mix.
Use Surprise Me for the most creative results. It randomizes your format's settings AND picks a random theme — often surfacing combinations you wouldn't have thought to try.
Variety engine
BuildMyClass tracks the last 10 classes you've generated and actively avoids repeating the same exercises. The more you use it, the more varied your classes become automatically.
Playlists & Spotify
Every class includes a playlist of real songs with artist names, BPM estimates, and section labels. The number of songs scales with your class duration:
| Class Duration | Approximate Songs |
|---|---|
| 30 min | ~7 songs |
| 45 min | ~10 songs |
| 60 min | ~13 songs |
| 75 min | ~17 songs |
| 90 min | ~20 songs |
Click 🎵 Open on Spotify at the bottom of the playlist to search Spotify for the mood and genre. You can then build your own playlist from those results.
Song suggestions are AI-generated and may occasionally include songs that don't perfectly match the BPM or mood. Use them as a starting point and swap any that don't fit your style.
